About Us

History of IMB

Institute Menezes Braganza is a cultural institution set up by the Portuguese in colonial times, during the late 19th century. It was taken over by the Government of Goa and continues to play a role in cultural activities of Goa. Following the end of Portuguese rule in Goa in 1961 by Indian Army action, the institute was renamed after Luís de Menezes Bragança, a campaigner against colonial rule. It continued to get official government support. In 1997, in a step which was questioned by some, the Government of Goa took over the institution, and re-established it as a society under the Indian Registration of Societies Act, 1860. According to official documents, its aims are to “focus mainly on the promotion of activities in the fields of Language, Literature, Art & Culture in Goa”. It also “primarily seeks to promote Goan talent in allied areas and to meet the versatile cultural interests of Goan society as a whole.”

The Institute Menezes Braganza, (Govt. of Goa Undertaking), Directorate of Art & Culture, Government of Goa is a prominent renowned institution of long standing repute in Goa, promotes language/ literature, art and culture in the state.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of the Institute Menezes Braganza focus mainly on the promotion of activities in the fields of Language, Literature, art & Culture in Goa. 

 

It primarily seeks to promote Goan talent in allied areas and to meet the versatile cultural interests of Goan society as a whole. The Institute Menezes Braganza also provides a common platform for interactions such as symposia, Panel discussion, lectures, talks, debates, elocution contests, recitals and performances. 

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of the Institute Menezes Braganza focus mainly on the promotion of activities in the fields of Language, Literature, Art & Culture in Goa. It primarily seeks to promote Goan talent in allied areas and to meet the versatile cultural interests of Goan society as a whole.

The Institute Menezes Braganza is also collaborating its activities with other like minded institutions such as National Book trust, New delhi, Sahitya Akademi, Goa Konkani Academi, Gomantak Marathi Academi, Gomantak Sahitya Sevak Mandal several other institutions/ organizing literary, academic and other related activities.

The Institute Menezes Braganza is also providing other facilities

1)Providing a common platform for interactions such as symposia, Panel discussion, lectures, talks, debates, elocution contests, recitals and performances.

2)Organizing conferences, seminars, literary festivals, Poet’s meets, workshops, exhibitions and competitions etc.

3)Publishing Books, Seminar papers, souvenirs, pamphlets, conference proceedings, bulletin/ournals and to create a valuable database information.

The Institute has published books on:

The Institute is headed by the Chairman (appointed by Govt. of Goa), Member Secretary, four member nominated by the Govt. of Goa and the President of the following reputed institutes as the members. (1) Gomantak Marathi Academy, Porvorim (2) Goa Konkani Academy, Panaji (3) Sanskrit Pracharini Sabha, Margao (4) Gomantak Sahity Sevak mandal, Panaji (5) Gomantak Rashtrabhasa Vidhypeeth, Madgoa (6) Director, Directorate of Art & Culture, Govt. of Goa, Secretary, Art & Culture, Govt. of Goa & Finance Secretary of Govt. of Goa are Ex officio Member of this Institute.

The Institute is receiving annual grants from Govt. through Directorate of Art & Culture, Panaji Goa as per the approved pattern of assistance.

Govt. is renovating the heritage building of Institute Menezes Braganza and is coverting the existing halls into A.C.halls. The Office and entrance premises of IMB is also being renovated. The P.W.D. is executing the work. The work of renovation was started in May 2010. All the civil, electrical A.C. work is almost completed.

Govt. has renovated the Halls of Institute Menezes Braganza by converting the existing Halls into AC Halls with accoustic and modern sound system. The PWD has undertaken the work of Renovation of the Halls of Institute Menezes Braganza.

The Main hall & Conference hall were inaugurated on 24th Nov. 2012 at 3.00 pm. as it is the foundation day of the Institute.

The renovated Halls, were inaugurated at the hands of Hon. Chief Minister Govt. of Goa, Shri Manohar Parrikar.

Hon. Minister for Art & Culture was invited to preside over the function of the Halls on 24th Nov. 2012.

The Halls i.e. Main Hall & Conference Hall is made available to General public for different programmes by payment of respective hire charges.
